C's Get Degrees What is the deal with grades anyways?

I think society puts way too much emphasis on grades in an academic setting. A person can go to college receive all C's and walk across the stage like everyone else, so what's the big deal. Now I know that people may try to get accepted into prestigious law and medical schools but just because a student received all A's does not mean that they are any smarter then someone who got C's. I've meet people who had 4.0 G.P.A. but had no commonsense whatsoever. I also feel that the classes that I received C's in were the most beneficial to me because I learned from my mistakes, corrected them and moved on. However, the C 's look bad on a transcript. Does anyone understand what I am trying to say?

What do you call a Doctor that barely passed med-school with C's???? A doctor . . . you as a patient never know their grades!!





Seriously though, grades tend to be the best way for an employer or a college, depends on what you are talking about, to gauge future performance. Sure, someone with C's might be as smart as someone with A's, but if they are as smart, why not put forth a little more effort and make the A since it is apparent that you will be judge on that.
Reply:C's may get you a high school degree, even a college degree, but a C in graduate school is considered a failing grade. That's right, C = F and will get you kicked out of the program.





College does not teach you common sense. But a 4.0 vs a 2.0 does certainly mean you learned a lot more, and will help a lot more in getting a job.
Reply:Yes, but grades are not a sign of intellect, but rather of work ethic.
Reply:I think you're right quite frankly. The only reason why grades are awarded is to quantify a school's student body. But I will say this, if someone got an A in a class that you got a C in it only means that either 1. the teacher and grading method were too subjective or 2. the other person knew how to study and/or had a better work ethic than you.





but yes it is unfair. but good grades are good for grad school, for showing off (not like anybody really cares though outside of school), employment, and just for self-esteem matters. the system sucks but you should be happy with the fact that we all have to live with it. also, what you said earlier is true. lol look at our current president, c student.
Reply:Put it this way. If an employer has to make a choice between 2 people, and one has a 4.0 vs a 2.0, who do you think he's going to choose?


A 2.0 suggests that the person is lazy, disorganized, etc... It doesn't matter if its not true - that's the impression the employer is going to get.
Reply:I understand what you're trying to say and a lot of times you're right, but unfortunately that's the way society is. Not only do prestigious grad schools look at transcripts, but also some employers do as well. A transcript of all A's show the employer that the candidate is committed to completing their goals. Whereas a transcript of all C's will show the employer that the person is happy with getting by with the bare minimum. Try to put yourself in the employer position of two people who are equally qualified for the job, but one has a transcript of all A's and the other all C's...Who would you hire? Hope this helped.
Reply:I have to agree with you on this one.Many students who made A or A/B honor roll don't have common sense,heck I didin't made honor roll in my high school but I have way more common sense than them.
Reply:yea, but in the end, everyone looks at your grades. If you're trying to get an internship and the company sees that you have low GPA, they wont hire you. What are you going to say? that you're as smart as a person who has a 4.0? Best bet is to just get good grades, its so much easier to deal with.
Reply:I totally understand what you mean. I just started college last fall and I agree with the fact that the demanding standards put too much pressure on students. Unfortunately, C students generally don't get as far as A students, even though, like you said, they may have excellent book AND street smarts. : )
